Part of a national competition to raise the standards of maths teachers across Cambodia, the competition involves classroom observations to assess maths teaching skills.

Using a tool provided by the Ministry of Education and Youth Services (MoEYS), the Department of Education in each district evaluated teachers and sent recommendations to the Battambang Provincial Office of Education (POE) who then conducted another round of classroom observations.

Ms Sam Kimsean is a teacher at Koh Ream Primary School in Bavel District. She has been teaching for 8 years, and has been involved in the SeeBeyondBorders’ Quality Teaching program since 2014. She told us the award was made possible by SeeBeyondBorders.

I used the teaching methods I learned from SeeBeyondBorders’, and maths resources I learned about in SeeBeyondBorders’ workshops. That’s what I was able to show when POE come to video and observe me in my class.

Ms Kimsean’s teaching skills were also recognised with a gold award in the 2016-17 Krou Loar (meaning “Good Teaching” in Khmer) awards program, developed by SeeBeyondBorders to motivate and recognise improved professional standards.

Ms Kimsean will now compete with maths teachers from other provinces in the final round. Representatives of MoEYS will conduct further classroom observations by video, and will select the top maths teacher in Cambodia.

From everyone at SeeBeyondBorders, congratulation Ms Kimsean, and best of luck for the national finals later this month!
