Special thanks to the students of St Mary’s Primary School, Manly, who are currently supporting the Nutrition Programme at Old Piek Snaing.
The school house or hall, in Old Piek Snaing village is used for many different purposes relating to the development of the local children. As a classroom or a refectory, local children have the opportunity to learn and have a meal here, which is simply not available at home. Soup or “Bor’bor” is the usual diet served once or twice a week or sometimes more often if there are volunteer groups to get involved in the process. Ingredients are bought in the market and then prepared and cooked in the kitchen adjoining the hall.
We are currently funding school nutrition programmes in two villages and will fund more as soon as sponsorship is received.
We are currently funding school nutrition programmes in two villages and will fund more as soon as sponsorship is received. Each nutrition programme costs $2,500 to feed chicken, vegetable and rice soup to the children in the school and their siblings weekly, for one year.
The kitchen is a hot smoky place and the cooks often have their small children in there while the wood fires are heating the cauldrons of bor’bor. According to Stuart Conway, co-founder of Trees, Water & People, a not-for-profit based in Fort Collins, Colorado, respiratory problems caused by exposure to smoke from unventilated cooking fires kill more than 1.6 million women and children a year in developing countries. We are planning to fund the construction of a chimney on the cook house and also some form of veranda to cover the washing up area outside the kitchen.
