School at Chrok Sdeak
Construction of a Lower Secondary school (grades 7 to 9) in the existing Primary school grounds at Chrok Sdeak.Chrok Sdeak in Kompong Chhnang Province is strategically located with many small villages in the surrounding area. The primary school is well attended and has extensive lands donated by the village Buddhist Pagoda. The local community is interested in further developing its capacity to provide higher level education to those living within a close proximity to the current school.
The project included:
a) 5 rooms in concrete
b) 120 student benches + 5 whiteboards
c) 5 teacher desks & chairs
d) Water tank, guttering, 3 room toilet, flagpole & gate.
Enrolment rates in primary school are now high (91.9% 2009 MoEYS figs). However enrolment in lower secondary school is below 50% in urban areas dropping to 11% in remote areas. The average in rural areas is 29% with Kompong Chhnang marginally above that rate. Accessibility of lower secondary schools is a major contributing factor to the rural and remote areas’ attendance numbers and strengthening one particular community that is strategically well located is considered the best way to influence a wider area.
With the completion of the lower secondary school building and basic facilities, there is now an opportunity for children who are graduating from grade 6 to progress to grade 7 in the same locality. It also provides SeeBeyondBorders with an opportunity to continue to work with a community who are engaged with the notion of educating their children through teacher training, resources, mentoring and other programmes such as health and nutrition.
This school complex, with both Primary and Lower Secondary capabilities, provides a location for SeeBeyondBorders to visit regularly, provide teacher support and continue to develop and evaluate its programme of education assistance.
