The village of Phum Steung is within striking distance of Siem Reap City and despite the superficial affluence of Siem Reap, being reflective of its tourism industry, the percentage of population living in poverty in the province is 31.1% (est 2010).

The school at Phum Steung is already successful and has drawn large numbers of children from the surrounding area, which has required the building of makeshift classrooms (shelters) to accommodate them. The community at Phum Steung has a relatively strong commitment to education and without appropriate buildings it is not possible to further develop the level of education that can be provided. This SeeBeyondBorders project included:

a) 3 rooms in concrete;
b) Student benches and whiteboards; and
c) Teacher desks and chairs

The school currently has 581 students divided between 14 classes, with 11 teachers. While the biggest beneficiaries in the short term will be those children currently in the temporary classrooms, it is anticipated that the whole school community will benefit in the medium term through working with SeebeyondBorders in relation to teacher training, resources, mentoring and other programmes such as health and nutrition.
